Read on as our remodeling experts at D-Wing Construction walk you through some door problems that might catch you off-guard this season as well as how you can fix them.
Problems Caused by Temperature Changes
You might recall from science class how things contract when they get cold. Unfortunately, this causes some problems with how doors fit inside jambs. In winter, doors begin to “pull” away from the corners, resulting in sagging and warping problems on the jambs and, sometimes, your siding. You can try to replace the screws with slightly bigger ones to minimize the effects but it’s recommended to contact your local contractor to fully avoid this problem.
Humidity and Wood
While cold temperatures make things contract, the opposite is true for wooden doors and high humidity levels. Wood is a porous material and, even when treated, can absorb moisture, causing it to expand past the limits of their jambs and frames. This mostly happens to interior doors when you have a humidifier attachment to your heating system. Contractors recommend replacing old wooden doors with metal or vinyl to prevent this problem from recurring.
Weatherstripping Failure
When the weatherstripping around your doors are worn out, you’ll begin to experience drafts coming from all its sides. You can re-apply new weatherstripping with DIY kits from your local handyman shop but these rarely last long and might not perform as well as a professionally applied strip. Ask your local door installer to update your weatherstripping to effectively prevent air leakage.
